Privacy Statement and Guidelines
The Credit Union has an obligation to all its members of confidentiality and will not disclose personal information to any other party without your consent, unless required by law to do so.
The Credit Union has recognised the importance of protecting and securing your personal information and is committed to complying with the Privacy Act 1988 following the changes made to the Act by the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 and the Credit Union Code of Practice.
Why Does the Fire Brigades Employees' Credit Union Collect this information?
We collect information to enable us to:
- Provide membership benefits to you.
- Provide you with our products and services.
- Provide you with information about products and services available to you from Fire Brigades Employees’ Credit Union and other organisations.
- Enable associated companies and business to assist you with related services.
- Adequately administer your accounts.
- Establish and manage your financial needs.
How Does the Fire Brigades Employees’ Credit Union Collect Personal Information About You?
When you join as a member the Credit Union obtains information such as your name, address and date of birth. When applying for a loan the Credit Union obtains information such as your salary, employer details and financial position.
Access to Your Personal Information.
Under the provisions of the Privacy Act you have the right to access your personal information we hold about you. If the information we hold is incorrect, you have the right to request us to amend the information. We do not charge a fee for requesting access however; we may impose a fee to recover our reasonable costs.
Information to Third Parties.
It may be necessary for us to provide your personal information to other organizations with which we are associated. It is the Fire Brigades Employees' Credit Union’s responsibility to administer your accounts however, sometimes we need to outsource some of our administrative and related functions to external organizations such as solicitors, auditors, accountants, printers, mailing services, insurers, collection agents, conveyancers, Credit Union Services Corporation Australia Ltd and government agencies which regulate our products and services.
Your personal information is only provided to third parties to the extent necessary to enable us to provide our products and services to you and if required by law.
If Information is Not Provided.
If you do not provide us or submit incomplete or inaccurate information this may:
- Affect your eligibility for membership
- We may be unable to provide products and services to you
- If you do not provide your Tax File number there may be taxation implications for you.
Other Rights and Obligations.
Under the privacy Act 1988 you have a number of rights. You have the right to:
- Update your personal information if you believe that it is out-of-date or no longer applicable.
- Complain to us if you believe that we may have improperly used or handled your personal information.
- Make a formal complaint to the Privacy Commissioner if you are not satisfied with, the way that your complaint has been handled by us or the outcome of the complaint.
